You may have seen a door hanger that advocates action against aircraft noise. This green-and-white hanger measures 4.5 x 11 inches and was prepared jointly by Quiet Skies Los Altos Hills and Sky Posse Los Altos advocacy groups. Generous volunteers will be distributing the door hanger through the Spring of 2016.
This door hanger lists a series of facts. You've come to the right place to learn the source materials that substantiate these facts!
FACT: Aircraft noise causes increases in coronary heart disease and strokes.
LEARN MORE: Evidence indicates that the body’s response to a noise event at night, even when the individual continues to sleep, may lead to increased risk of higher blood pressure and long-term heart disease. Read "Aircraft noise linked with heart problems", a study published by the Harvard School of Public Health in October 2013.
FACT: Aircraft noise is significantly associated with learning problems in children.
LEARN MORE: There is robust evidence from over 20 studies to demonstrate that aircraft noise exposure has impacts on children’s reading comprehension or memory skills. Read "Does noise affect learning? A short review on noise effects on cognitive performance in children", published by the National Institutes of Health in August 2013.
FACT: Many people will not buy or rent in an area under an airline superhighway. Experts say property values can drop up to 22.5%.
LEARN MORE: Read "The Impact of Airport Noise on Residential Real Estate", published in The Appraisal Journal of July 2001.
FACT: The FAA unilaterally lowered altitudes and increased the number of flights over our homes. Over 2/3 of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills are under new, condensed flight corridors.
LEARN MORE: The FAA is in the midst of a nationwide rollout of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen), a project which has been plagued by cost overruns and schedule delays. In the Bay Area, the NextGen rollout started in March 2015. The FAA bills NextGen as quiet and efficient, but the truth for those on the ground is very different.
FACT: If enough people don't complain, our elected officials will take no action and we will be stuck forever with this increased aircraft noise!
LEARN MORE: Take action! Visit here for a list of what you can do to complain.
